Cleaning the Dog's Ears
Your dogs ears are also incredibly sensitive. They suffer from many
of the same problems that we do. If their ears get wet or dirty, they
can suffer a serious infection that causes an unnecessary trip to the
vet. A simple cleaning can do wonders to keep them healthy and clean
until their next trip to the vet.
You will need to have a bottle of ear cleaning formula. Just using
water won't do a whole lot and the formula isn't expensive. Also pick
out a clean cotton ball and cotton swab. Apply the ear cleaner to the
cotton ball. Do not try to soak the cotton though. In fact, you should
let the excess drip off into the sink and give it a light squeeze to
drain any soaked areas. You do not want it to run down into the ear
canal. With the cotton ball prepared, hold your dog in a comfortable
manner. Then gently put the cotton ball just by the ear. Lightly run
around the ear itself and then give your dog some room. They will
probably stop to wiggle their head and shake the excess liquid away.
This is natural and makes sure that it doesn't stay in the ear.
While they're doing this, prepare a cotton swab with just a little
bit of the formula on one end. Hold your dog again once it's prepared.
Use the cotton swab to clean the little ridges around their ears and
under any flaps. Do not try to actually clean their ear with the cotton
swab. This should best be left to a trained professional. If you keep
the outer edges cleaned every few weeks, the ear canal shouldn't be too
dirty anyway. They'll at least last until their next checkup.
These should be fairly simple processes that any pet owner may use.
Just stay relaxed while paying attention. It isn't going to be much
harder than cleaning your own ears. Just know your limits and don't try
anything too complicated on your own.
