Daily Dog Care Checklist
Caring for a dog is a serious commitment. Your pet is such a devoted
animal and it deserves to be cared for with the utmost devotion. There
isn't any one perfect routine that you should practice to keep them
healthy. There are some basic steps that you may take each day to help
keep them happy and healthy. If you make it a fun little routine, it
should be easy as pie.
First, do a search through their fur. This actually isn't too hard. Just
pay attention while you are petting them. There's a lot to be said for
basic vigilance while you're petting. You should be able to feel any
bumps, welts, or clumps that they may have. These could be signs of an
allergy or illness if they steadily occur Also try and look through
their fur to see any red spots that they may have. This would be a sign
of an allergic reaction and you need to get the jump on any allergies.
Second, a tick check. This is right up there with vigilant petting.
You should be able to spot a number of ticks this way. If you don't live
in a home by a wooded area, this probably won't be a big concern. Ticks
are more of a suburban problem. If you do live in a tick-prone area, try
to look in a few little hiding spots. Check your dog's “armpits” and
lift their ears. Some small ticks can get into this niches and pig out.
You definitely want to nip them in the bud.
Third, look at their face and pay particular attention to their eyes.
This should just take a few seconds. You just need to look for any off
color mucus around their eyes or nose. Also watch how much they're
draining. Abnormally high drainage could mean an infection or that some
foreign object is trapped in their eye.
Fourth, you can give them a basic shampooing each day. There are several
types available at pet stores that don't require water. You can just rub
a little in and let it set. This will keep them clean and smelling
sweet. It should also keep their coat nice and full. It may not be
necessary for all dogs. Other dogs that frequently get dirty could
probably benefit from it though.
Finally, check their behavior when you take them out to go to the
bathroom. Don't just watch for any issues with their bladder. That will
be pretty easy to spot. The really important thing is to watch for any
other issues with their body. This time will usually expose any back or
leg issues in a clear way. It's not like there's much else to do anyway.
These basic steps should be able to keep your dog healthy and happy.
There are other things you'll need to manage. They should have a weekly
bath and they should also receive a good nail trimming along the same
schedule. You won't need to worry about this for your daily efforts
though.
